Homestead Manor Profile in the Shore Health Update

This profile appeared in the Fall 2015 edition of Health Update by Shore Update:

Homestead Manor at The Wesleyan Retirement Community in Denton is an assisted living facility within a multi-level retirement community. Homestead Manor was founded on the principles of acceptance, compassion, care and love. Homestead Manor is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing a caring home like environment and their mission is to support independence, comfort, dignity and safety in an individualized, high-quality life experience.

Special Education… Certified dementia care manager and administrator, Christine Harrington, feels it is important to note that Homestead employees are trained in working with dementia patients since one-third of its approximately 60 residents suffer from the illness.

Music & Memory… This is a special program administered by Mandy, the full time Homestead activities director. The program helps dementia and Alzheimer’s patients with memory recognition. A playlist of songs that pertain to a patient’s life is compiled with the help of families. It is then played back to the patient through headphones, helping to encourage and evoke joy and remembrances from the past. Mandy adds that anything related to music are favorites with residents. These include trolley rides on the 80-acre campus with musical entertainment as a backdrop and visits by Roy Hobbs, a local favorite pianist and musician who visits Homestead regularly

Career Oriented Staff… The staff members are career-oriented and full time employees with benefits that include grants for continuing education to best serve the residents, creating a more family-oriented environment with a low turnover rate. It is not unusual to see a staffer on their day off watching a football game with a resident.

Most Popular Services…

Beauty Salon – On site stylist Shirley makes sure residents are feeling and looking their best. A full service salon makes beauty convenient especially for those seeking a weekly shampoo, set and style, a favorite service for the lady residents.

Daily Activities – Activities are designed for both low- and high-functioning residents. A favorite of residents like Blanche is beach volleyball, proving that even at age 94 you can stay active. Other favorites include Quarter Bingo and Scrabble Showdown.

Homestyle Eastern Shore Cooking – On site full-time dietary director Helen brings the flavors of the Eastern Shore to Homestead. Breakfast is served daily and made-to-order. Lunch time favorites include a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and fried chicken. For dinner, a bowl of vegetable crab soup served with shrimp macaroni is always a crowd pleaser.

Security System – An advanced system helps keep unwanted visitors out and helps keep residents safe in the common areas as well as in the 5 separate wings.

Physical Therapy – In-house physical therapists help residents plan for an earlier return to their homes after hospital stays and eliminate the need for outside transportation. Physical therapy assistants like Kendle are able to help residents build strength with resistance training in the comforts of a home atmosphere. Doctors also visit residents on site or residents can choose to keep your own doctors off campus.

Personalized Laundry Service – Residents’ clothing and bedding are individually washed twice weekly by staff member Marcel. The residents appreciate Marcel’s attention to detail and service.

Most Innovative Offerings…

CareTracker System – Homestead Manor is the first assisted living facility in the state to install Cerner Corporation’s CareTracker system for long-term care. “This system is a very valuable tool for our staff and residents because it provides us with documentation of a resident’s status throughout the day and will remind staff of needs or tasks that must be completed for each or our 60 residents.”- Christine Harrington, Homestead Manor Administrator

Med Management Technologies’ QuickMAR – This is an electronic medication administration records system implemented in partnership with Craig’s Pharmacy of Cambridge. It gives staff more time for hands-on assistance and also saves residents thousands of dollars annually by dispensing prescription drugs on a 3-day basis. Traditional dispensing methods waste pills due to prescription changes, drug interactions and discontinued use of prescriptions. All medication comes pre-packaged with bar codes, greatly reducing the chance of human error.

Respite Care – Homestead Manor provides respite care for families who care for their loved ones and may need to go out of town or need a break from their care schedule. Oftentimes, these temporary visitors have become residents because they enjoyed their stay so much. It is encouraged that a potential resident attend as a respite guest prior to determining if Homestead is a perfect fit for them.

A ‘Stand Out’ Moment in the Local Community…

Voted ‘Best Non-Profit’ by the Caroline County Chamber of Commerce
What makes Homestead Manor stand out from other assisted living homes is that it is a non-profit organization. There is no bottom line and their entire philosophy is based on caring. They are run by the Christian-based Wesleyan Church and not by a large corporation so their care is personalized and based on the individual needs of each of its residents.

Homestead Manor was initially founded as an assisted living for retired pastors and their spouses, but later was opened up to the general public and continues to adhere to many of its founding principles. Prayer groups and services are performed weekly for various Christian faiths. Homestead Manor provides for the entire resident; mind, body and spirit. Residents are encouraged to be as independent as they want to be. Many residents have cars and are quite active in the community. Residents bring their own furnishings and decorate their rooms with all the comforts of home. Homestead offers three levels of care, and residents are placed where their personalities and level of care best suit their needs. Homestead provides a lot of training hours for their staff since through education the staff can be empowered to make decisions and to care for the residents more effectively even on a moment’s notice. The care residents receive at Homestead Manor is second to none and completely personalized. They accept private payments and long term care insurance and participate in aid and attendance programs for veterans and their spouses.
